Sculpture From Found, Repurposed and Created Objects.
My interest in animals started very early in life. My father was a small animal veterinarian. In the early years of his practice, he had a pet store as a client. They would bring in exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds that my dad would treat for various things. My father also volunteered his labor to the Youth Science Center which had an animal library. Children could rent pet rats, guinea pigs and other small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, checking them out for a week or so, just like a library book.
My animals are carved or created from various materials such as wood, metal, foam and epoxy clay. The forms are covered in various fabrics and materials, then placed on or with repurposed objects. The animals are interacting with the objects or with items I have created to give each sculpture a life of its own. My jewelry skills allow me to create small detailed items to make each scene more engaging. Each sculpture invites the viewer into my world of make-believe and tells a story.
The Early Bird Gets the Worm
A vintage clock hosts 3 birds. The front of the clock features a bird pulling a hand-carved copper worm from the face. 3 tiny bronze beetles with sterling silver antennas climb up the side of the clock while a small fly (not show in photo) rests on the opposite side. The back of the clock was removed to show the intricate clock mechanisms. I created a copper door with clear acrylic, riveted through pearls so that the scene in the back of the clock can be viewed. Two birds and a nest are nestled inside the clock. The nest was handwoven out of steel wire and rusted. A baby bird and two eggs are inside the nest, while the momma bird offers a small beetle to the baby. It measures 15”tall x 8.5”wide x 8”deep. $2800
